Walking with Christ - Colossians 2:6, By: Louise Malan

When I was saved as a child, I did not know all there was to know about being a Christian, but God directed my path as I walked with Him through life (Colossians 2:6). I grew up in a home, in South Africa, where we went to church every Sunday. My dad read the Bible to me at night and we always prayed together. I did my best to please my parents and teachers and was a good child. It wasn't until I was 12 years old, that I realized I needed a personal relationship with Jesus. During a youth group meeting, the leader explained that I needed to repent my sins and trust in Jesus to be saved. I realized I was a sinner and I accepted Christ as my savior. After I repented, I began to understand what I was missing in my life.

Having a personal relationship with Christ from a young age is good and a struggle. Good in that the Holy Spirit guides and directs when making choices and decisions, such as career choices and finding a godly husband. A struggle in that the world is ‘oh so tempting’ to a teen who is concerned with what ‘the other kids think’. But through this time, I grew spiritually and learned lessons for adulthood, such as making important decisions. God lead me to study medicine and to become a General Practitioner. He led me out of my comfort zone many times in my life, but the most memorable was when I went on a mission trip in Swaziland. During this mission trip, I learned to trust God for my immediate needs. On our mission trip my car broke down, and we were in trouble with the local authorities for no fault of our own. During these events I felt scared and alone, but God intervened and answered all my prayers for help and assistance. It was also on this trip, that I met my husband, Jurie, my best friend and soulmate. We have been married for 36 years now. God led me to Jurie in the most unexpected way, which was all a part of his ultimate plan.

As I look back, God has always provided the right people (Godly friends and mentors) at the right time in my life. For instance, I met a Godly friend at my University, and had a prayer warrior Mother-in-Law. He always opened doors to the perfect job positions for me (as my husband moved a few times for his career as an electronic engineer). I learned to trust God and he supported me with all of my needs.Whenever we moved he guided us to find a church home, where these people became our family. When we moved to different cities in South Africa, and then the big move to the USA, we always had people in our lives to support us every step of the way. Moving to another country was quite difficult, maybe extremely difficult, but if it wasn't for the Lord and our Christian friends, I do not know how we would have made it. God had a plan, and moved us where we needed to be for a purpose. He placed the right people in our lives at the right time because he knew what our needs were before we did.

I am so thankful for the blessings God has given me and continues to provide me day by day. Throughout my life there have been trials – many trials! I have found that during those trials I have drawn closer to God. I have been on my knees in prayer, seeking God’s wisdom. We have been through infertility, roughly nine moves across different states and countries, a child with birth defects and disabilities, another child with disabilities, financial decisions, giving up my career, teenagers, aging ill parents that are far away and much, much more. In the early years I would work out plan A, plan B and maybe plan C ( I am a major planner). I would then take it to God, who would then answer, in His time, with Plan D, which was always way better than any of my little plans. As I matured I learned to pray to God first and seek His wisdom!I learned to relinquish control and depend completely on Him. I have made mistakes in my life, but God has always been there for my family and I, to help us out when we needed Him most.
I have been on a wonderful journey, walking with Christ through many years in my life, trusting Him, praying and studying His Word.I have learned to serve Him by teaching Sunday School, Ladies Bible Studies, hosting life groups, encouraging others, volunteering for mission trips to India and Swaziland, and helping with the youth. He has blessed me through all of these journeys. My life with Christ has been exciting and comforting knowing that I have a heavenly father to count on, and have a personal relationship with.
Here are some of my favorite scripture versus that I have prayed many times in my life during trials and in times of need.

Romans 3:23 + 24: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ

Colossians 2:6 Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him.

James 1 : 2+3. Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance

Proverbs 1:7. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; Fools despise wisdom and instruction
